New innovations are having huge impact on the construction industry. Technological advancements are often thought of as a tool to save money and improve accuracy. But they are also being adopted as a way to make construction jobs less risky.
Drones
For construction projects in remote areas or potentially dangerous areas, surveying the land can be one of the biggest obstacles. This is why many companies today are using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, to survey land through aerial photography. These vehicles can identify risks more accurately compared to traditional surveying methods, and can do so without putting any personnel at risk. Hence, construction industry is using drones widely in many areas.
Wearables
The increasing prevalence of wearables such as smartwatches is catching on in the construction industry. Smart personal protective equipment is helping to eliminate injuries and fatalities in the workplace.
Tech company Human Condition Safety has created a smart safety vest and hard hat equipped with features such as GPS, electric field detection, activity monitoring. These wearables, combined with cloud software, allow managers to understand the work environment of their staff. The data gathered through these technologies can help prevent accidents before they occur, whilst also providing insights on what behaviours can be changed to minimise future risks.
There are a number of smart safety wearable products available today, such as Smart Cap’s Life band, Triax Technologies Spot-R Clips, and Microsoft’s Holo-Lens.
Smart Sensors
Site sensors constantly test the air across construction sites. They can measure the temperature, humidity, pressure, noise vibration, and the presence of toxins like asbestos in the air. These devices will alert workers if any toxins reach dangerous levels, allowing them to evacuate and avoid serious harm. Sensors in Construction is becoming a norm nowadays.
